There’s something truly special about giving a handmade gift, especially when it’s something you’ve baked yourself. Edible gifts carry warmth, care, and a bit of your story. Every bite reminds the recipient of the time, love, and thoughtfulness that went into making it.
This Christmas, I’m sharing a recipe close to my heart: Lebkuchen, a traditional German spiced biscuit.
And to make your gifts even more magical, I’ve created a video tutorial showing how to turn them into snowflake, gingerbread men garland, and a star centrepiece with a candle, perfect for gifting or decorating your table.
As I think of this recipe, I’m transported back to my childhood visits to Germany and Switzerland, where twinkling Christmas market lights reflected off the snow, Lebkuchen hearts hung everywhere, and the cold was always fought off with steaming hot chocolate for the little ones and mulled wine for the adults. The scent of spice, sugar, and warmth filled the air, and those moments became my earliest Christmas memories, memories that now inspire every edible gift I make.
✨ 1. Why Edible Gifts Feel Personal
Handmade treats are more than just food. They’re memories, care, and connection wrapped into a delicious package.
They show you’ve thought about the person receiving them.
The scents and flavours evoke nostalgia and comfort, the smell of Lebkuchen spices reminds me of those festive mornings at the markets, and can now fill your home with that same magic.
Decorating and packaging them adds a creative, personal touch that store-bought gifts simply can’t match.
These little details make your gifts memorable, and give them a story that lives beyond the baking tray.
🍪 2. Lebkuchen: A Taste of Tradition
Lebkuchen has been part of my Christmas memories since childhood. The aroma of spice and sugar from the markets, combined with the frosty air outside, made every bite feel like magic.
In my video tutorial, I’ll show you step by step:
How to prepare the perfect spiced dough
How to cut it into fun shapes: stars, snowflakes, and gingerbread men
Tips for baking so the biscuits are soft, fragrant, and beautifully golden
Each bite carries a little bit of that festive nostalgia, a sweet memory to share with the people you love.
❄️ 3. Snowflakes and Gingerbread Men Garland
Once baked, your Lebkuchen can become more than biscuits, they can become festive decorations:
Pipe royal icing on snowflakes for delicate detail
Use a small holes in each cookie and thread them onto ribbon to create a gingerbread men garland
Hang them on the tree, across a mantelpiece, or along a staircase for a sweet, handmade touch
As you hang each piece, you can almost imagine walking through the twinkling Christmas markets, feeling the crisp air and smelling the sweet spice, bringing a little of that magic into your home.
⭐ 4. Star Centrepiece with Candle
For a show-stopping edible gift or table decoration:
Bake star-shaped Lebkuchen and decorate with icing or edible glitter
Light the candle for a sparkling centrepiece that smells as amazing as it looks
This is perfect for gifting, or for creating a centrepiece that invites family and friends to gather, just like the festive gatherings at the markets I remember as a child.
🎀 5. Packaging Your Edible Gifts
Presentation makes a big difference:
Wrap cookies in cellophane tied with ribbon and a cinnamon stick
Place small stacks of biscuits in kraft boxes with parchment paper and a handwritten tag
Combine garlands, snowflakes, and star centrepiece pieces in gift baskets for a truly memorable package
Each thoughtful detail makes your edible gift feel personal, a little piece of warmth and nostalgia to share with those you love.
💌 Bringing It All Together
Baking these Lebkuchen biscuits and turning them into decorations or gifts is more than a craft, it’s creating memories, sharing warmth, and celebrating the joy of giving.
Whether you use my DIY tips from the video tutorial or add your own creative touches, your edible gifts will carry the true spirit of Christmas: connection, love, and a little bit of magic.
🌟 Next Sunday on the Blog
Next week, I’ll be sharing “How to infuse your home with the scent of Christmas, paired with with a delicious cranberry-orange shortbread recipe".
Until then, may your week be filled with sugar, spice, and just the right amount of icing dust.
